Emissions

Greenhouse gases are released during the extraction and production of natural gas. CO2 is the best-known example of this. Methane is another example. Methane, the main component of natural gas, has a much stronger greenhouse effect than CO2. According to the latest report by RIVM (National Institute for Public Health and the Environment), 3.1% of methane emissions in the Netherlands in 2017 came from the gas chain (exploration, production, transport and distribution), while 16.2% came from the waste sector and 69.5% from agriculture. Work is currently being done in the gas sector to systematically further reduce methane emissions. The sector also wants to increase transparency about methane emissions.
